Romanian is a language belonging to the Balkan-Romance subgroup of the Romance languages of the large Indo-European family. Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova. Romanian developed from several dialects of vulgar Latin, which split off from Western Romance languages between the 5th and 8th centuries. The Romanian language inherited five cases from Latin: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative and vocative. This is how it differs from other Romance languages, where there are no cases left. Morphologically, the forms of the nominative and accusative cases of nouns completely coincide, as well as the forms of the genitive and dative cases. A characteristic feature of the Romanian language is its slight dialect fragmentation. The dialects of Muntenia, Moldavia, Maramuresh, Banat and Transylvania are almost identical, except for a small number of regionalisms. Another name is often used for the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova: "Moldavian language". However, at the state level and in the Constitution of the country, the name of the language is spelled out as Romanian. Romanian is spoken mainly in Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe. The total number of speakers is approximately 28-29 million people. About 24 million are native speakers.
