Afrikaans is a language of the West German group, which developed in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch dialect. Afrikaans was used by Dutch, French and German settlers and the peoples enslaved by them. In the 18th century, Afrikaans gradually began to acquire distinctive features. It is currently spoken in South Africa, Namibia and (to a lesser extent) in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. According to 2010 data, the total number of Afrikaans speakers ranges from 15 to 23 million people. Afrikaans is currently one of the 12 official languages of the Republic of South Africa. Since the mid-1990s, his role in education and public life has declined significantly, but he continues to occupy an important place, for example, in the media. Differences from Dutch include morphology and grammar of a more analytical type, as well as some pronunciation options. About 13.5% of South Africa's population (7 million people) speak Afrikaans as their mother tongue, making it the third most common mother tongue in the country after Zulu and Xhosa. Afrikaans has an extensive vowel list consisting of 17 vowel phonemes, including 10 monophthongs and 7 diphthongs. There are also 7 marginal monophthongs. Nouns in Afrikaans, as in modern Dutch, do not have a case system and grammatical gender (unlike modern Dutch). Adjectives can be declined if they precede a noun.
