Modern forms of Traditional Chinese characters first appeared during the Han Dynasty, around 200 BC. In the 5th century AD, during the reign of the southern and northern dynasties, hieroglyphs took a more or less final form that has survived to the present day. The term "traditional" in relation to this form of Chinese writing appeared after the reform of Chinese writing in the People's Republic of China in the 1950s. This reform of Chinese writing simplified the writing of many hieroglyphs and became known as simplified. Due to the widespread use of simplified Chinese writing around the world, the name traditional began to be used to denote the old non-simplified form. Currently, Chinese traditional forms of hieroglyphs are used in Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, as well as in many Chinese communities around the world.
