Kazakh is a Turkic language that is part of the Kipchak-Nogai subgroup of the Kipchak language group. Kazakh is the official language of Kazakhstan and a significant minority language in the Ili-Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang in China. Kazakh is also spoken by many ethnic Kazakhs in the former Soviet Union, Germany and Turkey. Like other Turkic languages, Kazakh is an agglutinative language and uses vowel harmony. Linguists distinguish three mutually intelligible dialect groups: northeastern Kazakh, southern Kazakh and western Kazakh. Northeast Kazakh serves as the basis for the standard language. This language has a certain degree of mutual understanding with the closely related Karakalpak. Since 1940, the Kazakh Cyrillic script has been used in the USSR and after the collapse of the USSR in the Republic of Kazakhstan. But since 2017, a gradual transition to the Latin alphabet has begun.
